Devotion: Finding Your Purpose in God

    Today
By SLM Ghana Spiritual Formation Team

A reflective devotion on understanding God's purpose and living it out with intentionality.

    Finding Your Purpose in God

Scripture Focus: Jeremiah 29:11 and Ephesians 2:10

    Opening Reflection

One of life's deepest questions is "What's my purpose?" We wonder if we're meant for something significant, if our lives matter, if we're living out God's plan. This devotion explores how to find and live your purpose through God's eyes.

    The Scripture

Jeremiah 29:11 - "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope."

Ephesians 2:10 - "For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."

    What This Means

These verses tell us three powerful truths:

    • God has a plan for you. You're not here by accident. God intentionally created you with unique gifts, talents, and experiences.
    • God's plan is good. God isn't cruel or capricious. His purpose for you is for your welfare, your growth, and your ultimate good.
    • You're designed for purpose. You were created for "good works"—for making a difference in the world through your unique calling.

    Finding Your Purpose

Look at Your Talents and Passions - What activities make you lose track of time? What problems in the world break your heart? These often point to your purpose.

Consider Your Experiences - Your struggles and triumphs have prepared you for something. How might your story help others?

Seek Wise Counsel - Talk to mentors, family, and community members. They often see purpose in us we can't see in ourselves.

Pray and Listen - God speaks through prayer, Scripture, circumstances, and the Holy Spirit's prompting. Create space to listen.

Start Where You Are - Don't wait for perfect clarity. Begin serving and using your gifts where you are now. Purpose often unfolds through action.

    Common Misunderstandings

Myth 1: "My purpose must be something big and dramatic." Reality: God values faithfulness in small things. Raising a godly family, being an honest worker, and showing kindness are all expressions of purpose.

Myth 2: "Once I find my purpose, everything will click." Reality: Purpose gives direction, but life still involves challenges. You may have multiple purposes at different seasons.

Myth 3: "There's only ONE perfect purpose for me, and I have to get it exactly right." Reality: God gives us freedom within His will. Many paths could be aligned with God's purpose for you.

    Personal Reflection

    • If I could change one thing in the world, what would it be?
    • What gifts and talents has God given me?
    • Who in my life seems to be living out God's purpose? What can I learn from them?
    • What's one small step I can take this week to move toward my purpose?

    Action Step

This week, have a conversation with someone you respect about purpose. Ask them: How did you discover your purpose? What helps you stay faithful to it? Take notes and reflect on how their journey might inform yours.

    Closing Prayer

God, help me see Your purpose for my life. Open my eyes to my unique gifts and the ways I can make a difference. Give me courage to step into what You're calling me to do. Help me trust that You have good plans for me, even when I can't see the full picture. Guide me step by step, and help me be faithful in both big and small things. In Jesus' name, Amen.

    Carry It With You

Memory Verse: "For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope." - Jeremiah 29:11

Remind yourself today that God has purpose for your life and that He's inviting you into it.
